Down side is that the motor isn't particularly strong and the paddles don't scrape very well. Sometimes it'll build up an ice crystal and stick and fling your ice cream mixture all over, necessitating more cleanup than most ice cream makers.
Still, for what it is, it's fantastic and the price is right.
My method is to take my cream, my sweetener, and some vanilla, cinnamon, or cocoa powder, and put it into a blender bottle Usually 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup is enough. Shake to mix, then stick in the freezer for a few minutes to get very, very cold, then I pour into the ice cream maker. Works great.
I haven't tried making a custard yet, but I could I suppose and it'd be more like traditional ice cream I think.
The manual...More
The manual is very basic and the translated English can be tricky to read at some points. It's very easy to disassemble to clean thoroughly. It's not terribly loud. You can definitely hold a conversation near it while it is running without needing to raise your voice. The whole device is about the size of a large canteloupe.
So far, I would highly recommend it!
So far I've made a basic mix of 75 ml (2.5 oz) heavy cream and 75 ml of a milk product, either milk, or almond or coconut or macadamia milk, with 2 tablespoons of Lakanta monkfruit sweetener (which tastes great), and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Then I flavor it as cherry vanilla ice cream (with 1 tablespoon of cherry pie filling), or a loaded chocolate ice cream, with Ghirardelli chocolate sauce 2T, Kahlua 1T, mini chocolate chips 1/2 T, almond slivers 1/4 T, shredded coconut 2 t, and almond butter 2 t, amazingly good for the work involved!
I love this machine, and I can make it every night with very little work (mix ingredients, chill in freezer for 15 minutes, churn in ice cream maker for 10-20 minutes, and it is ready to eat, unless you want to firm it up with another 15-30 minutes in the freezer. Rinse out the chilling bowl and put it back in the freezer for tomorrow!
